Barany

(dark pop from Canton of Valais, Switzerland)

BARANY hangs like a dark melodious fog between your ears for some time after listening. This music is sultry and evocative with a deep rumbling undertow that complements the clean unpretentiousness of the lyrics. BARANY’s vocals are supremely silky, slipping between the gentle and whispery, and something a little grittier, riddled with harmonies and sweetly sad at times. Echoes of Portishead and Radiohead are present but with the definite stamp of originality – delicately wrought and skillfully layered, yet of a rawness that leaves this music feeling so organic and alive. Enter BARANY’s world by letting yourself fall into it backwards.

Since their first live gigs in 2017, BARANY has released a highly-acclaimed debut record, «Lights Disappear» (2019), played numerous festivals (Blue Balls, Zermatt Unplugged, and Openair Gampel, among others), and toured Germany. In 2021, they were nominated at the Berlin Music Video Awards for their cover version of Nirvana’s «Heart-shaped Box.» The gifted Swiss-British act’s international collaborations include producers Dan Austin (Massive Attack, Biffy Clyro) and re:dasein, as well as mastering mastermind Matt Colton (Thom Yorke, James Blake, Sampha). 2022 will see BARANY’s front-woman Tanya Zimmermann support Trip-Hop royalty Morcheeba and co-release exciting new material with aesthetic soulmate and filmmaker Jonas Ruppen!

"On their released debut album "Lights Disappear" BARANY’s front-woman Tanya Zimmermann manifests herself as a singer who seeks a middle ground between Joni Mitchell of the late 70s and the atmospheric post rock of David Sylvian. BARANY sounds a bit foggy and fragile, but unexpectedly always has another ace up her sleeve. In one case or another, you can get comfortably lost in their dark dream world." - ENOLA.be
